Most water heater calls are one of three things. It has stopped, it is leaking, or you are tired of renting it. All three are fixable and only one of them is urgent.

If you rent your tank, you have probably worked out that the monthly fee has long since passed what the unit is worth. Getting out of that is a calculation, not a sales pitch: what you pay a month, what the buyout is, and what a replacement you own would cost. We will do that arithmetic with you. We do not rent water heaters, so we have nothing to gain from the answer going either way.

What it usually turns out to be
The things people describe on the phone, and what each one normally means.
Why do I have no hot water?
On a gas tank, usually the pilot or the thermocouple, which is a repair rather than a replacement. On electric, usually an element or a thermostat. Neither means the tank is finished.
Why does my hot water run out so fast?
Either the tank is undersized for how the house actually uses it, or sediment has taken up the space the water used to occupy. The second one is reversible.
My water heater is leaking. Is that fixable?
Depends where from. A fitting, a valve or a connection is a repair. The tank itself is not. If it is coming from the body of the tank, it is going to fail and the only question is when.
How long does a water heater last?
Long enough that the ones that flood a basement are almost always the ones nobody was watching. Replacing on your own schedule costs less than replacing on the tank's.
Should I buy or keep renting?
Work out what you pay a year, what the buyout would be, and what a replacement costs installed. For most people who have rented for a while the arithmetic is not close. Bring your rental statement to the call and we will go through it.
Is tankless worth it?
Sometimes. It suits houses that run out of hot water and have the gas supply and venting to support it. It is a poor answer to a tank that simply needs a new element.
What affects the cost
A repair and a replacement are very different numbers, and which one you need is not knowable over the phone. What moves the price is fuel type, venting, where the tank sits, and whether anything has to be brought up to code while it is open.
